Who charges the tolls around MIA

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (SunPass)

Runs SunPass and Florida's Turnpike, including the Homestead Extension. Florida toll roads are all electronic.

Without a pass: TOLL-BY-PLATE bills the registered owner by plate photo, plus a $2.50 administrative fee per 30-day invoice. It cannot be used on Florida Managed Lanes such as the I-95 Express lanes.

In a rental car: TOLL-BY-PLATE is not available for customers in rental cars; invoices go to the registered owner, the rental company. If you own a SunPass Portable, add the rental's plate and dates to your account.

Greater Miami Expressway Agency (GMX)

Formerly the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX). Runs five all-electronic expressways in Miami-Dade, including the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) beside the airport.

Without a pass: SunPass or toll-by-plate; no cash.

Before you take the counter's toll plan

Around Miami a toll plan question is hard to avoid: the fastest routes use cashless toll roads, and Florida says Toll-By-Plate is not available to rental car customers. Your options are the rental company's program or your own SunPass Portable added to your account for the rental dates. Each rental company's plan and fee is in its rental agreement; read that before you accept a plan at the counter.

Can I drive from MIA to South Beach without tolls?

Yes. The fastest route uses the Dolphin Expressway going and the Airport Expressway coming back, both GMX toll roads, but surface streets and the free MacArthur Causeway get you there a few minutes later.

Can I use Toll-By-Plate in a rental car in Florida?

No. Florida's Turnpike Enterprise says TOLL-BY-PLATE is not available for customers in rental cars. Tolls go to the registered owner, the rental company, unless you add the rental's plate to your own SunPass Portable account for the rental dates.

Is there a toll to Key Biscayne?

Yes, going. The Rickenbacker Causeway is the only road onto the island and charges southbound, from Miami. The trip back north is free.

Is the drive to Key West tolled?

Only near Miami. The fastest route uses the Dolphin Expressway, the Don Shula Expressway and the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike; US 1 through the Keys is free.
